A quiet street can still require intense attention. In a Dutch erf, people may be walking close to your car, visibility can be restricted and the right driving speed can be lower than the posted maximum.
I’m Elvis Begic from Rijschool in Maastricht. I teach manual Volkswagen Golf lessons in English and Dutch, combining clear explanations with practical observation.
Know the legal starting point
Articles 44 and 45 of the [Dutch traffic rules, RVV 1990](https://wetten.overheid.nl/BWBR0004825/2026-07-01), state that pedestrians may use the full width of roads within an erf and drivers must not exceed 15 km/h. This is a maximum, not a target.
Do not assume that every narrow residential street is an erf. Check the actual signs and road situation rather than guessing from the appearance of houses or paving.
Look for people before looking for progress
During lessons, consider where someone could appear: beside parked vehicles, near an entrance or from an area hidden from view. Avoid focusing only on the gap wide enough for your Golf.
When visibility is limited, a lower speed gives you more time to understand what is happening. Be ready to wait rather than trying to keep moving at all costs.
Smooth manual control helps observation
Low-speed driving is not just a clutch exercise. It should leave enough attention for the surroundings. We practise coordinating the controls with looking ahead and around the car, without prescribing one gear or pedal position for every situation.
If controlling the car takes all your attention, say so. Repeating a manageable exercise is more useful than pretending you can already combine everything independently.
An example to discuss after a lesson
Imagine someone walking beside a parked car ahead. Ask yourself where they might move next, what you cannot see and whether your current speed leaves enough time to respond. This is a learning scenario, not a description of a particular Maastricht street.
Use our self-reflection guide to describe what you noticed and what help you still needed. Our article on independent route driving explains why a navigation instruction never replaces your own observation.
Calm local practice
Lessons in Maastricht can connect residential-road skills with junctions, roundabouts and busier roads. Depending on agreed arrangements and current possibilities, we can also discuss lessons around Meerssen, Bunde, Gronsveld and Cadier en Keer.
