Before a driving school can reserve a Dutch practical car test in your name, you must give that school permission. In Dutch this is called **je rijschool machtigen**. The authorisation is completed through Mijn CBR and protects you from an exam being booked by the wrong school or without your knowledge.

I’m Elvis Begic from Rijschool in Maastricht. I provide calm, personal manual driving lessons in English and Dutch in a Volkswagen Golf. This guide explains the official authorisation process, what to check and how it fits into your preparation for the practical test.

Why does the CBR require authorisation?

The CBR states that a learner who wants to take the practical car test must authorise the driving school that will reserve it. After the authorisation is completed, both the learner and the driving school receive a confirmation email.

The driving school may then reserve a test only in your name. An authorisation is permission to make the reservation; it is not proof that you are ready for the test, it does not create a guaranteed test date and it does not replace the other official requirements.

Read the current instructions on the official CBR page: authorise your driving school for the practical car test.

What do you need?

Before you start, make sure you have:

Ask the driving school for its CBR number and check the details shown in Mijn CBR before confirming. The CBR also says you can find the number through its Rijschoolzoeker.

Do not guess a number and do not select a school merely because its name looks similar. A calm check now can prevent confusion later.

How to authorise the school through Mijn CBR

The official CBR instructions describe these steps:

1. Go to Mijn CBR and log in with your own DigiD. 2. Choose **Opleider machtigen**. 3. Select the appropriate category and the practical test or test authorisation. 4. Enter your email address. 5. Choose what the school may reserve for you. 6. Find the school using its CBR number, or its name and location. 7. Read and accept the authorisation and examination conditions. 8. Check all details and confirm the authorisation. 9. Keep the confirmation email.

The wording or screen layout can change, so follow the current instructions shown in Mijn CBR. The official CBR overview is available at authorise your trainer with DigiD.

Never share your DigiD

Your DigiD is your personal digital identification for Dutch government services. The CBR explicitly warns learners never to give their DigiD to another person.

Your instructor may provide the correct school details and explain where the authorisation is located, but should not ask for your DigiD login, password or verification code. Complete the login and confirmation yourself.

If you cannot apply for a DigiD, the CBR mentions a separate authorisation form for a trainer. Use the official route and check the current CBR instructions instead of sending identity documents through an informal message.

Authorisation does not mean an exam is immediately booked

Completing the authorisation allows the driving school to reserve the relevant test for you. It does not mean that a date has already been reserved.

The CBR advises candidates to coordinate an exam date with their driving school beforehand because possibilities to move the date are very limited. Your practical level, valid theory result, CBR health decision, the school’s planning and available CBR dates all matter.

That is why we first look honestly at your driving. Can you observe independently, control the manual car, make safe decisions and recover calmly when traffic changes? A package or a fixed number of lessons can never guarantee that moment.

Read how many driving lessons you may need in Maastricht and our guide to the CBR Health Declaration.

What if you change driving schools?

The CBR says that if you want to change schools, you must first withdraw the existing authorisation. You can then authorise the new school through the official process.

Before changing, also clarify any existing reservation and financial agreements with the current school. The CBR authorisation and your private lesson agreement are separate matters. Withdrawing an authorisation does not automatically settle payments, packages or cancellation conditions.

From authorisation to practical preparation in Maastricht

The administrative step is small, but the driving preparation remains personal. During manual lessons in Maastricht, we work on observation, junctions, roundabouts, lane position, independent route choices and smooth control of the Volkswagen Golf.

Depending on the agreed route and current possibilities, lessons may also include nearby areas such as Meerssen, Bunde, Gronsveld and Cadier en Keer. Instruction is available in English or Dutch, with clear feedback and no exam guarantees.

If you are at the beginning of your course, read how to start driving lessons with confidence. If you are under 18, also check the separate official steps explained in driving lessons from age 16½.

Practical checklist before you confirm
