Passing the Dutch car theory test is an important step, but the result is not valid indefinitely. The CBR currently states that a positive car theory result is valid for **18 months**. That period starts on the day you pass.

I’m Elvis Begic from Rijschool in Maastricht. I provide calm, personal manual driving lessons in English and Dutch in a Volkswagen Golf. This guide explains what the 18-month period means and how to plan your practical training without making promises about an exam date or result.

The 18 months start on the day you pass

The CBR says that a positive theory result for the car, motorcycle and moped categories remains valid for one and a half years. For a car learner, the date that matters is the day on which you passed your theory test.

Do not calculate the final date only from memory. You can check the exact expiry date in Mijn CBR:

1. Log in to Mijn CBR with your DigiD. 2. Go to **Examens en toetsen**. 3. Open **Mijn examens en toetsen**. 4. Select the relevant theory test.

Use the official CBR explanation: how long is a positive theory result valid?.

It must still be valid on your practical-test day

The theory result must be valid when you take the practical car test. It is not enough that it was valid when the test was discussed or when the driving school first looked for a date.

The CBR checks before the practical test whether you have passed theory and whether that result is still valid. The CBR also requires you to have been declared fit enough to drive. Read more about that separate procedure in our guide to the CBR Health Declaration.

A driving school cannot extend the validity period and cannot guarantee that an available practical-test date will fall before your personal expiry date.

When should you take the theory test?

There is no single perfect week for every learner. Taking theory very early gives you useful knowledge for practical lessons, but taking it long before your practical progress may use a large part of the 18-month period.

A sensible plan considers:

For learners starting from the beginning, theory and practical lessons can support each other. Traffic rules become more concrete when you meet them in real Maastricht traffic, while practical situations help theory make sense.

If you are still planning your start, read how many driving lessons you may need in Maastricht. The answer depends on the individual; a package is never a guarantee.

What if your theory result is nearly expired?

The CBR states that if you do not pass the practical test within the 18-month period, you must pass the theory test again.

If you already expect that you will not complete the practical test in time, the CBR currently allows you to retake the theory test from **three months before** the existing result expires. The reservation may be made earlier. Always check your own dates and the latest options in Mijn CBR before acting.

Retaking theory is not a punishment. It ensures that the knowledge used for the practical test is current. Use the remaining time to identify weak topics instead of merely memorising the same answers again.

Do not let the expiry date create unsafe pressure

An approaching date can make learners feel that every lesson must now lead directly to the exam. That pressure is understandable, but it should not replace an honest assessment of driving ability.

Being exam-ready means more than completing a planned number of lessons. In a manual car you must combine observation, decision-making, speed choice, clutch and gear control, lane position and communication with other road users. You also need to recover safely when a situation does not go as planned.

If the practical level is not ready, rushing to protect the theory result can be more expensive and stressful than making a realistic plan. We discuss progress using specific driving situations, not vague promises.

A simple planning conversation with your instructor

Tell your instructor the exact expiry date shown in Mijn CBR. Then discuss:

Authorisation is another separate step. Before a school can reserve your practical test, you must give permission through Mijn CBR. See our safe guide to authorising your driving school.

Learning in Maastricht and nearby areas

During personal manual lessons we can connect theory with real decisions around Maastricht: priorities at junctions, roundabouts, speed changes, lane selection, observation and anticipating cyclists and pedestrians.

Depending on the agreed route and current possibilities, lessons may also include Meerssen, Bunde, Gronsveld and Cadier en Keer. Lessons are available in English or Dutch in my Volkswagen Golf. I provide instruction and honest feedback; the CBR determines the official requirements and exam result.

Quick checklist

You can view the current lesson prices and options or contact Elvis to discuss your goals, preferred language, location and current experience. Ask about current possibilities rather than assuming availability.

The official CBR information was checked on 25 October 2026. Rules and online procedures can change, so use the expiry date shown in your own Mijn CBR account and follow current CBR messages.
